And that led to her being whisked away. The world’s oldest woman, 117-year-old Violet Moss Brown, is dead.Sadly, Moss-Brown, died shortly after being spirited away from her home of many years by relatives as a family feud erupted over her care and treatment.According to relatives who cared for Browne at her Duanvale, Trelawny home, she was supposed to be taken by another family member to hospital for a medical appointment on Saturday but was not taken back home.Moss Brown, who is affectionately called Aunt V, reportedly died at the Fairview Medical Centre in Montego Bay, St James about 2:30 pm Friday. She was 117 years old, being born on March 10, 1900.Moss Brown became the world’s oldest human on April 15 after the passing of Italian Emma Morano, who was born on November 29, 1899. Not pleased with treatmentRussell, who lives in Miami, said he was not pleased with the treatment his mother was receiving at her home and he accused her grandchildren, with whom she lived, of being greedy and uncaring. He claimed his mother was alive and remained steadfast that her whereabouts would not be made known. Death leaves a bitter tasteAs news of Miss V’s passing broke, social media pages went abuzz with many users condemning her relatives for removing her from her home of many years and blaming them of causing her to die of a broken heart.A woman identified as Karen Samuel took the matriarch last weekend and had refused to bring her home. Samuels reportedly told her relatives that she was instructed by Barry Russell (Moss Brown’s son) to take her to the hospital to get her hydrated. Samuels then revealed that she was instructed by Russell to remove Brown from her home and not to reveal her whereabouts to anyone.
A new era dawned in Cuba on Thursday when 57-year-old Miguel Díaz-Canel was sworn in as the new president of the communist country, replacing Raúl Castro who decided to bring to an end the Castro family’s decades-long rule on the island.Díaz-Canel had been serving as Cuba’s first vice-president for the past five years. The National Assembly, the country’s legislative body, nominated Díaz-Canel even as Castro remain in a powerful position staying on as head of the Cuban Communist Party until its next congress in 2021.No restoration of capitalismIn his inaugural speech, Díaz-Canel said his mandate was “to ensure the continuity of the Cuban revolution at a key historic moment” and assured the members of the National Assembly that “the revolution continues its course.” He also said the country’s foreign policy would remain “unaltered” and that any “necessary changes” would be decided by the Cuban people, and there was “no room in Cuba for those who strive for the restoration of capitalism……Cuba needs you.” This prompted the more than 600 National Assembly members to rise to their feet and give the 86-year-old former leader a standing ovation.Groomed for presidencyIn 2013, Diaz-Canel was regarded as Castro’s right-hand man and for the past five years, he has been groomed for the presidency and the handover of power. He studied electrical engineering and began his political career in his early 20s as a member of the Young Communist League in Santa Clara. While teaching engineering at the local university, he worked his way up the ranks of the Young Communist League, becoming its second secretary at the age of 33.Faces challengesBut he faces a challenging period in office. Cuba’s economy is weak, and he needs to implement policies to reinvigorate the economy by pushing ahead with the controversial economic reform program launched by his predecessor. Relations with United States and President Donald Trump have deteriorated. In June 2017, Trump declared he was “cancelling” some Obama-era Cuba political reforms and re-tightening parts of the decade’s economic embargo that Washington imposed soon after Fidel Castro overthrew the Batista government in 1959.

PLANTATION, Florida – Have you ever stopped to think about gum disease? The damage dental plaque germs cause can be permanent, but you can fight the germs with toothpaste, a toothbrush and dental floss. Read on to learn more about plaque and ways to protect your teeth and gums. What Is Dental Plaque?Even if your teeth look clean, they may still be accumulating plaque. Plaque is a soft, sticky germ-rich film that is constantly forming on your teeth. You can’t always see plaque, and even if you recently brushed, it will continue to form on the teeth and gumline. You need to be diligent about dental care to control it. Frequent brushing and flossing are the best way to stop this source of tooth decay and gum disease.Plaque Gets Tougher to BeatOver time, untreated plaque will form and if it is not removed it will become a hardened layer of buildup called tartar. The combination of the plaque continuing to form on the tartar will lead to the oral infection called gingivitis. Symptoms of gingivitis include red, swollen or sore gums and sometimes bad breath can occur. Fortunately, gingivitis is typically treatable with proper brushing, flossing and seeing the dental hygienist for a preventive dentistry (i.e. professional cleaning) appointment. If you become aware of signs of infection associated with gingivitis along your gumline, you should act quickly by enhancing your dental care regimen because you can still save your teeth during this stage. Serious damage to the bone and connective tissue does not occur until the next stage, periodontitis. What Is Periodontitis?Over time, unchecked dental plaque germs can cause tooth decay and gingivitis as mentioned above and can also lead to periodontitis. In periodontitis, bacteria attach to teeth along the gumline and infection forms within the pockets surrounding the teeth. Persistent red and swollen or bleeding gums can occur as well as receding gums, pocketing around the teeth, teeth may become loose and you may experience bad breath and now it is time to get help. At this point, you are going to need to bring in professional assistance from your dentist and dental hygienist for a thorough professional cleaning or periodontal scaling and root planing if you want to save your teeth.Brush and floss frequently and attend regular professional dental cleanings and exams to keep plaque germs at bay. Do not hesitate to visit your dentist if you experience symptoms of gingivitis or periodontitis — gum disease should not be trifled with.Dr Sharon Robinson, DDS, owns and operates the Dental Place in Plantation, Florida, with a second office – the Dental Place Cosmetix Spa in Kingston, Jamaica.
